A month of real talk on marriage culminates in a life-changing Couples Retreat in Takoradi.
Marriage Gets Real on the Airwaves
Marriage Gets Real on the Airwaves
In August 2025, Accra’s Sunny 88.7 FM devoted its airwaves and social platforms to
one of life’s most important yet often misunderstood commitments—marriage.
The special series, Marriage Unscripted, ran throughout the month, tackling issues many couples struggle with but rarely voice. From forgiveness and parenting challenges to intimacy and empty nest syndrome, the series cut through the polished images of perfect marriages and delivered what listeners needed most: honest conversations grounded in faith and practical wisdom.
It all led to the highlight of the season—the Sunny Couple’s Retreat 2025, held from 29 – 31 August 2025 at the Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, Takoradi. For many, it was a weekend of laughter, tears, reflection, and renewal.
Why “Unscripted”?
Marriage is often scripted in ceremonies and social expectations. Yet real life brings job loss, distance, unmet needs, or children who grow up and move away. Sunny FM recognized that behind closed doors, many couples carry silent struggles.
Marriage Unscripted was designed to shine a light on those realities, offering a safe, faith-anchored platform to talk about them.
“Conflict is inevitable—but destruction is optional,” said marriage counsellor
Veronica Rita Sackey, one of the series’ most impactful voices.
Highlights from the Series
Across the weeks, listeners tuned in to hear pastors, counsellors, and everyday couples share unfiltered truths:
- Supporting Each Other’s Dreams – Mrs. Sackey challenged couples to cheer each other on, reminding them that marriage is about partnership, not competition.
- Friendship in Marriage – Rev. Nana Adjei Kuffuor urged spouses to rediscover laughter, hobbies, and companionship as the foundation of intimacy.
- The Four Types of Marriages – Michael Ohene-Effah mapped out marriages as shattered, strained, stressed, or serene, encouraging couples to be honest about where they stood.
- Parenting God’s Way – Rev. Dr. Mrs. Anona Sarbah emphasized that child-raising should be a unifying, not dividing, force.
- Parenting with Special Needs – Yawa Hansen-Quao opened hearts with her personal testimony of raising a child with special needs, showing the strength of mutual support.
- Empty Nest Realities – Rev. Dr. Kisseaddo addressed how couples must reinvent their bond once children leave home.
The conversations resonated deeply because they went beyond theory. Listeners heard lived experience, scripture-based wisdom, and practical tools.
The Build-Up to Takoradi
Midway through August, Sunny FM’s presenters began connecting the radio themes to
a bigger event: the Sunny Couple’s Retreat 2025.
This promised to be a weekend designed to “reignite love, build stronger connections, and renew faith in marriage.” Bookings poured in. By the final week of August, couples across Ghana were making their way to the coastal city of Takoradi, eager for what awaited.
Inside the Retreat
The retreat unfolded over three days at the serene Atlantic coast.
- Friday opened with a welcome dinner and then we went straight into a session on the Couples Guide to Financial Independence with Paul Mante. His sense of humour kept participants engrossed in his session as he delivered step by step insights on couples attaining financial independence.
- The Saturday spent at The Groove, Essipong Beach Resort was packed with a session on Taming the 4 Horsemen that Destroy Marriages & small-group fun activities.
- Sunday closed with a renewal service, where couples prayed together and made fresh commitments before heading home.
Throughout, worship anchored the sessions, while walks, meals, and casual fellowship deepened bonds beyond the lectures.
“We came tired and heavy, but we leave here light, laughing, and ready to love again,” one participant shared.
Lessons That Stuck
From both the series and retreat, several lessons stood out:
- Communication is everything. Listening with empathy matters as much as speaking.
- Seasons change. From career loss to empty nests, marriages must adapt or risk drifting apart.
- Faith anchors love. Prayer, scripture, and shared worship strengthen resilience.
- Intimacy goes beyond sex. Emotional and spiritual closeness keep marriages alive.
- Community helps. Sharing struggles with others relieves isolation and builds courage.
Challenges Raised
Of course, real issues surfaced too: unspoken financial expectations, shame around infertility or intimacy, and the fear of losing momentum after the retreat glow faded.
Facilitators urged couples to sustain growth through weekly check-ins, mentorship groups, and prayer partnerships.
Why This Matters
In Ghana, marriage is not just a private relationship but a cultural and spiritual cornerstone. Yet it faces modern pressures—migration, financial stress, shifting gender roles, and mental health struggles.
Sunny FM’s Marriage Unscripted initiative showed that radio can do more than entertain; it can transform lives. By pairing media conversations with a live retreat, the station bridged the gap between theory and practice, offering couples the tools to grow stronger together.
Conclusion
The Marriage Unscripted series and Sunny Couple’s Retreat 2025 proved that when
marriages are given safe spaces for honesty, healing, and faith, love can be rekindled.
Sunny 88.7 FM did not just broadcast music and talk—we built a community of couples committed to walking the journey together, unscripted but not unsupported.
Furthermore, if you missed it, there is another opportunity to benefit from some of the Resource Persons and the session they held at the Sunny Couple’s Retreat. On Saturday, September 27 2025, there will be a Couples Retreat City Session with Michael and Leticia Ohene-Effah on the topic – Taming the Four Horsemen that Destroy Marriage. You may reach us on +233 54 522 3324 for more information and to book your slot for participation.
Meanwhile Singles, stay tuned in as something dynamic is being put together with you in mind.
As the echoes of August fade, one truth remains: the beauty of marriage lies not in perfection, but in choosing, every day, to love again.
