When most people think about aging, they picture wrinkles, grey hair and aching joints. But according to wellness physician Dr. Naa Asheley Ashietey, CEO of Nova Wellness Center, those are only the outward signs of a process that begins much earlier inside the body.
Speaking on Sunny 88.7 FM's Inspirational Morning Drive, Dr. Naa challenged listeners to rethink what aging really means, explaining that the body's decline often starts years before it becomes visible in the mirror.
"Aging is inevitable. But how quickly your body ages is something you can influence."
The Body Sends Warning Signs Early
Long before wrinkles appear, the body often sends subtle signals that many people dismiss as part of a busy life:
- Feeling constantly tired despite getting enough sleep
- Losing strength
- Struggling with persistent back pain
- Gaining or losing weight unexpectedly
- Having less energy than before
According to Dr. Naa, these may all be signs that the body's cells are not functioning as efficiently as they should.
One of the biggest contributors is chronic inflammation, a condition where the body's natural healing system remains switched on for too long. Instead of calming down after fighting infections or repairing injuries, the immune system stays in overdrive, gradually placing stress on the body's organs and accelerating the aging process.
Modern Life Is Aging Many Ghanaians Faster
Dr. Naa believes today's lifestyle is one of the biggest reasons people are aging faster than necessary. Hours spent sitting behind computers, long periods in traffic, workplace stress, irregular eating habits and little physical activity all contribute to inflammation and faster wear and tear on the body. Even sitting for extended periods every day can lead to joint degeneration, poor posture and chronic pain.
Fortunately, reversing the trend does not require dramatic changes. Dr. Naa recommends taking regular breaks during the workday, walking more often, drinking enough water, practising breathing exercises and making time to truly rest.
"Recovery is just as important as productivity," she noted.
Your Kitchen May Hold the Secret to Healthy Aging
Perhaps the strongest message from the interview centred on nutrition. Dr. Naa explained that everything the body needs for repair and regeneration begins in the digestive system.
Highly processed foods and heavily cooked meals often provide fewer nutrients than people realise, leaving the body without the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy cell function. Instead, she encourages adults to eat at least three to four servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day, foods rich in antioxidants that help fight oxidative stress, reduce inflammation and support healthier skin.
She also urged people to drink more water while cutting back on sugary drinks and excessive alcohol consumption, which can burden the liver and accelerate aging.
Healthy Skin Starts From Within
Many people spend significant amounts on creams and cosmetics hoping to look younger. Dr. Naa believes the real transformation begins inside the body.
She recalled that people who increase their intake of fruits and vegetables often notice healthier, brighter skin within just a few weeks, because the nutrients support collagen production and improve overall cell health.
"Aging doesn't start on the outside," she explained. "It starts from within. If you improve what's happening inside your body, it will naturally show on the outside."
Small Habits Can Make a Big Difference
Dr. Naa also spoke about the growing field of biohacking, describing it as practical ways of helping the body perform at its best. Simple daily habits such as quality sleep, regular exercise, exposure to sunlight, proper hydration, healthy relationships and stress management all play an important role in slowing the aging process.
She explained that these natural habits can be complemented with specialised wellness therapies designed to improve circulation, reduce inflammation and support long-term health.
It Is Never Too Late to Begin
For those worried that years of unhealthy living have already taken their toll, Dr. Naa offered hope. She believes anyone can begin improving their health regardless of age.
The first step is understanding how well the body is functioning through a comprehensive wellness assessment, followed by a personalised plan that addresses each person's unique needs, whether weight loss, pain management, increased energy or overall wellbeing.
Her message was simple: growing older is unavoidable. Growing older in poor health is not.
The choices we make every day, from the food we eat to how much we move, sleep and manage stress, have a powerful influence on how we age. Sometimes the journey to a healthier future begins not with expensive treatments, but with something as simple as drinking more water, taking a short walk or adding an extra serving of fruit to today's meal.
