Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding Across Accra, Disrupting Traffic and Daily Activities

Several major roads became submerged after hours of persistent rainfall, resulting in heavy traffic and forcing many drivers to seek alternative routes. Hundreds of commuters experienced significant delays as floodwaters made some roads difficult to navigate.

Among the areas reported to have been severely affected are Weija, Mallam, Barrier, Achimota, Kaneshie, Tesano, Darkuman Junction, Spintex, Madina and sections around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange. In some communities, floodwaters entered homes and shops, causing residents to rush to salvage their belongings.

The heavy downpour also affected public transport services, with commercial drivers slowing down or avoiding flooded roads altogether to ensure the safety of passengers.

Authorities have urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution, avoid driving through floodwaters and stay away from open drains, many of which become hidden during heavy rains.

The flooding comes during Ghana's peak rainy season, a period that often brings flash floods to parts of Accra. Environmental experts continue to attribute much of the recurring flooding to blocked drains, poor waste disposal practices and rapid urban development that has outpaced drainage infrastructure.

Residents are also being reminded not to dump refuse into gutters and waterways, as this significantly contributes to flooding whenever heavy rains occur.

Even at 3:57 pm it was still raining in certain part. As weather experts continue to forecast more rainfall in the coming days, residents living in flood-prone communities are encouraged to remain alert, secure their property where possible and follow safety advisories issued by the relevant authorities.
