A Widow's Testimony: God Raised My Children When I Had Nothing

I had to share this lady's testimony. Read on.

My name is Elizabeth, and this is my testimony of God's unfailing love and faithfulness.

I lost my husband seven years after we married, leaving me with two precious children — Natasha, who was 5 years old, and Nathaniel, who was 2 — when their father, an evangelist, passed on to glory.

Not knowing where to turn, I looked to God to sustain me, but it was difficult to fend for myself and my children. At the time, even though I'm Ghanaian, I was living in Lagos. A friend invited me to Winners Chapel, Canaan Land. I hesitated at first because of the distance, but eventually I started worshipping there and joined a cell fellowship, where I became committed.

A Benefactor Appears

Not long after, I was told that a member of the church was looking for a widow to assist, and I was suggested to her. She asked me to find a school for my daughter — I had already sent my son back to Ghana to be raised by my brother, so he would have a male presence to train him right.

I went looking for an affordable school, since a friend had warned me not to choose an expensive one in case my benefactor turned it down over the cost. But when I told her the school I had picked, she insisted I look for a better one. I did — and she paid my daughter's school fees for three years before I ever met her. When it was time for secondary school, she enrolled Natasha in Faith Academy and paid her tuition all through. Beyond tuition, she gave me foodstuff and clothes for all of us, including my son back in Ghana.

"The God of David Oyedepo Will Do It for Me"

Natasha finished secondary school with excellent grades, and it was time for university. My benefactor told me to choose any university except Covenant University, because of the cost. But Natasha had her own plans.

"Mummy, I want to go to Covenant University," she told me.

I explained what my benefactor had said. Her reply: "The God of David Oyedepo will do it for me."

She applied for a scholarship — and was awarded a full one. Natasha went through Covenant University fully sponsored, without me paying a dime. Many times when I visited her, she would give me foodstuff and say, "Mummy, I have more than enough."

After graduating, she applied for the American immigration lottery, won, and became a United States citizen. She went on to join the U.S. Navy, where she has seen rapid, divine speed in her promotions.

Learning a Trade Instead of a Free Education

God wasn't finished — for He is the defender of the widows (Psalm 68:5, NLT). I eventually relocated back to Ghana and saw my son through school. When he finished junior secondary school, I told him he would need to learn a trade, since I had no money for further education. He understood and was ready to comply.

Just around that time, the Government of Ghana introduced free senior secondary education, and Nathaniel went to senior secondary school at no cost. While there, he joined the school's robotics club, and the team was selected to compete in the United States. Every other participant was granted a 3-month visa — Nathaniel, the youngest on the team, was the only one given a 5-year multiple-entry visa.

He returned home after the competition, finished school, and told me, "Mummy, I want to continue my university education in the USA." He wrote the SAT and passed with flying colours. Of the 30 schools he applied to, 28 accepted him. He chose Calvin University, on scholarship.

At the time, he still had four years left on his original visa. He went back to the embassy and, surprising them, requested a student visa instead. God was so good — he was granted a 6-year student visa. He is currently studying at Calvin University.

Two Children, Two Continents

Can anyone imagine that I — a widow who once couldn't afford to send even one child to school in Africa — now have both my children comfortably and legally settled in the United States?

Indeed, what God cannot do does not exist.
