"If you want to see what Jesus means to me, watch me work."
In a world where many Christians separate their faith from their work, one ordinary factory worker demonstrated that the most powerful sermon is often preached without a microphone.
Known simply as "Red" because of his bright red hair, he wasn't a gifted speaker. In fact, he often struggled to get his words out, and people were tempted to finish his sentences for him.
Yet despite his speech difficulties, Red was regarded as the greatest soul winner in his church.
One Sunday evening, the pastor decided to find out just how great his impact had been.
"I believe Red has led more people to Christ than anyone else in this church," he told the congregation.
Then he asked a simple question:
"If Red personally led you to Jesus Christ, please stand."
To everyone's amazement, more than 300 people rose to their feet.
Thinking there had been a misunderstanding, the pastor clarified:
"I don't mean he invited you to church where you got saved. I mean he personally shared Christ with you outside these walls."
Only about fifteen people sat back down.
The church sat in stunned silence.
His Workplace Was His Mission Field
Red worked in the tire foundry at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, long before automation made factory work easier.
It was dirty.
It was exhausting.
Workers finished ten hour shifts covered from head to toe in black dust.
A fellow employee shared the secret behind Red's extraordinary influence.
"Every morning Red would say, 'If you want to know what Jesus means to me, watch me work.'"
Then he would give everything he had.
He worked harder than anyone else, not to impress his boss, but because he believed he was working for Christ.
At first, his coworkers didn't admire him.
They resented him.
"You make the rest of us look bad," they complained.
Red never argued.
Instead, he replied:
"I can't slow down. I'm doing it for Jesus. But when I finish my work, I'll help you with yours."
And he did.
Day after day.
Year after year.
Without cutting corners.
Without complaining.
Without compromising.
One colleague admitted:
"For four years I watched him, waiting for him to fail."
He never did.
Finally the man said, "I want the Jesus he has."
A Testimony That Changed Lives
The testimonies continued throughout the service.
Even the factory's union steward stood to tell his story.
He recalled approaching Red to tell him to slow down because he was making everyone else look bad.
Red smiled and answered:
"You'll have to talk to Jesus about changing His Book, and He isn't going to."
That unwavering commitment became one of the greatest evangelistic tools his church had ever seen.
The Challenge for Every Christian
The story carries a timeless lesson.
Many people measure a good job by the salary it pays or by how little effort it requires.
The Bible presents a different standard.
Scripture teaches that Christians ultimately do not work merely for an employer, a company, or even for themselves.
They work for Christ.
As Colossians 3:23 reminds believers:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."
Perhaps the greatest question raised by Red's story is this: if your colleagues watched the way you worked every day, would they be drawn closer to Jesus?
Sometimes the loudest witness is not spoken from a pulpit. It is lived out faithfully in the workplace, one ordinary day at a time.
